It has a striking resemblence a boxelder bug, but the markings are different. Beyond that, I haven’t a clue. If there is a connection with boxelder bugs, they belong to the genus Boisea within the family Rhopalidae… that would narrow it down a bit.
There were several boxelder trees next to the building I grew up in. At some point in the summer or fall, there would be a population explosion of the bugs, and inevitably we’d find several a day had infiltrated our home. They were harmless, but we were not at all tolerant of them. Can’t recall why these decades later except maybe it was the “yuck” factor.

Thanks for the helpful info. Googled the box elder bug and you are so right. Looks very similar. I have seen lots of the box elder bugs in our area and now I finally know what they are. ๐
